Be the Change: Foster Dog seeks fan club

We are back for the third time to Blog the Change! Our dogs are still taking a break from blogging after the holidays and their hectic adoption schedule so you are once again stuck with the human counterpart of this blog :). I got inspired to write this story after reading one of our foster mom’s story of her foster dog T-Rex, a crazy little min pin.

She writes in her blog about how everyone in the group loves T-Rex so much that we probably need to start a fan club. T-Rex is one of those pooches that has been hanging around for a very very long, he has been with St. Louis Senior Dog Project for 2 years! and only once there has been interest in him :(. He is a great great dog, believe me I am one of his fans however he as many puppymill dogs comes with a bit of emotional baggage and sometimes potential homes are not to thrilled about this and so he gets skipped. His foster mom and her family have been great assets to T-Rex’s life and have given him the best life a pooch could get, but his forever home is still avoiding him. But what really got me thinking after reading her blog was the thing about the fan club, I started to wonder

what would happen if we all became fans of a dog/cat/bunny/pet in need of a home?

be a groupie, find out all about them and talk all about them to our friends and family, post their picture on facebook or your blog. Out there on the twitterverse we have Tweet a Pet tuesday and on facebook it is Share a Pet tuesday, and while those efforts are certainly appreciated by every rescue I started thinking what would happen if you chose just one pet to be a fan of for a month? What if you would pick a pet for any reason ( is a senior, looks like your own dog) and shared that one pet’s profile every other day on your facebook and twitter pages? and what if you told your coworkers about this particular pet? how about your family? The truth is that most pets that are with small rescues are out on adoption events only once a week, sometimes twice, and foster parents already have told their friends and family about their wonderful foster pets,

rescue pets need all the exposure they can get and for that they need fans! Groupies that become involved and invite more and more people to take a look at them and give them a chance. Groupies that take advantage of the social media right there in front of them! Don’t steer away next time you see a pooch on Petfinder that you think looks like the best dog ever, you may not be able to adopt them but someone you know might, get your fan groove going!

Puppy Mill Survivor Week: Mandy

Hi all , my name is Mandy, I am a 4 year old maltese and I am a puppy mill survivor. Six months ago, I was rescued and born again and this is my story.

My rebirthbegan June 19, 2010, when volunteers with several canine rescue groups attendeda live animal auction in rural Missouri. The volunteers hoped to rescue some ofthe 500 dogs for sale that day from a life as breeders.

At the auction,someone approached my dirty cage and whispered, “Baby girl, you are coming homewith me.” This someone was Ellen Ellick, founder and director of St. Louis Senior Dog Project, a non-profit rescue organization in eastern Missouri. Iwould not see Ellen again for hours.

Early in thesale, a young fellow held me overhead by the scruff of my neck. It hurt and Ishivered uncontrollably with cold fear. “What am I bid?” cried the auctioneer inhis rhythmic chant. “What am I bid?”

Ellen’s handshot up. “Sold!” shouted the auctioneer. With that single word, my old life wasover.

You see, I wasborn and raised in a large, commercial breeding facility, a puppy mill. My dam (mom),my sire (dad) and I were breeders our entire lives. Looking at life between thebars of a wire crate was all we knew.

When theauction ended, Ellen cradled me in her arms and consoled my frightened soul.She promised good things to come: someone would care for me, pamper me, love meforever.

Turns out, Ellenwas right. Someone does care for me, pamper me, and love me. I live in a fosterhome with lots of friendly doggies that teach me how to be someone's lifelongcompanion and part of a family. We play together, and sleep (a lot) on chenillepads during the day and on a big, comfortable bed at night. I like it when myfoster mom calls me Miss Mandy or Baby Girl. One of my greatest joys is runningfree in the yard. I skip, jump straight in the air, frolic with abandon, andrun happy circles around the trees.

For a longtime, I was skittish and panicky. Just about everything scared me. OK, everything scared me. When strangers reached out to pet me, I wasn’t sure whatthey might do with their hand and I became afraid. I tried to nip or bite thoseoutstretched fingers. Please, be patient, while I learn to depend on the kindness of strangers.

I enjoy briskwalks, and trot proudly beside my foster mom while surveying the neighborhoodwith my head and tail held high. This is my first Christmas on the “outside”and I love seeing the colorful holiday lights and decorations. Now that thetemperatures are colder, I dress up in a hot pink quilted vest or a pink argylesweater that match my pink collar and leash. I am pretty hot inpink.

I thank with open paws all those involved with my rescue and I am ready to start out a new life in a permanent home. Would you like toshare my life, too?

Puppy Mill Survivor Week: Radar

This week we are dedicating it to dogs that have survived the terrible life of puppymills and to start off we have Radar here to tell his story:

Hi There! My name is Radar, I wanted to tell you a little bit about me. My foster mom tells me that I have special needs, oh I'm not sick, I don't need medicine or surgery but I need special people to love me. You see I once lived in a dirty, dark place, that my foster mom calls a puppymill, I never had a name for it but it was scary. I had no idea that dogs lived like this, in a house, with soft beds, lots of food and water. You see in my old life I lived in a cage and walked on wires, I also had to go to the bathroom in the same place I slept and ate, it was really gross. I like my life now but I still get scared sometimes, I never knew that there were doors or steps, until I came to live with my foster mom. I had also never been on a walk, so I am unsure about collars and leashes but I'm working on it and my mom tells me I am doing great! I am special needs because I need special people, people that will be patient and loving with me because I am still learning about how dogs are suppose to live. Men really scare me, I think I might learn to get used to them but in my old life the men were not very nice to me. I learn something new everyday,and my foster mom tells me that she is going to help me find a home of my own, a home for a special needs dog like me. So if you have lots of patience and love will you consider adopting a former puppy mill dog of your very own? There are a lot of us out there, still waiting for that special place, we may never be the perfect dog but we will give you everything we possibly can, in hopes you will just love us and care for us. I think I see a stick in the yard that needs chewing, thank you for listening about my life and I hope you will consider giving a former puppy mill dog a safe and happy life full of love.

Benji the Teddy Bear

Hi all my name is Benji and it's my turn as Dog of the Week! I am so excited because the group that is taking care of me now the St. Louis Senior Dog Project just got their new website and I am featured in the banner! That got me all excited and I hope lot's of people look at my picture :)

So as a Dog of the Week I get to tell you a little bit about myself. About 5 months ago I got ditched at the pound by my previous owners because they said they were moving and there was no space for me in their new home. I wasn't really sure at first what was going on but when I realized I was at the pound I got really depressed. The people at the pound thought I may just die of sadness but a nice volunteer there tried to keep my spirits high and to get me out of there and in to a rescue. Then one day a volunteer from St. Louis Senior Dog Project came by the pound and guess who she saw? Me! I won't lie and say I knew exactly what was going on, nope I was kind of weirded out by all the moving and being in a home again, but after a couple of days I realized how lucky I was!

I am doing well in my current foster home and many of the volunteers of the group say I am a big teddy bear and that's probably because I am all fluffy :)

I love going to the park and for walks but I am not a power pooch BOL (bark out loud) I mean you won't find me running a marathon anytime soon!

This is Lizzy, she is a dog in hospice care with the St. Louis Senior Dog Project. She is a 3lb, completely blind and deaf pooch, she is very senior and has suffered several health setbacks that have placed her in hospice care rather than in the adoptable ranks in our organization. She is a precious senior lady that will stay in our care for the rest of her days. Be the Change: Forever Fosters

Hi all, today it's the human behind this blog typing and I can't tell you how excited I am to be participating in the Be the Change blog hop once again. When we first participated our non-profit the St. Louis Senior Dog Project had just started using facebook, twitter and letting the dogs do blog posts and I can't tell you how much I have learned since then and how many wonderful people and anipals I have met in the twitterverse and the blogosphere that are committed to helping animals in need and committed to spreading the word. So many thanks to all and today a special thanks to Be the Change for Animals!

My favorite topic of choice is always fostering, however today I will add something to the mix and write about fostering pets in hospice care. The reason I want to bring attention to these special kind of foster pets is because just recently I started learning more and more about the dogs that are in hospice care in our organization. As a volunteer for a non-profit that focuses on senior dogs I expected to once in a while end up fostering a senior dog with a special need like arthritis or cataracts and taking care of them until they found a home.

However in some situations a foster pet becomes a Forever Foster.
What is a Forever Foster? They are special needs pets with severe health conditions ranging from liver disease to cancer and due to these conditions they are not considered easily adoptable. Many foster families out there tackle the charge of taking in a pooch or kitty or bunny and more in to their homes knowing they will have them perhaps only for a few months or maybe for a few weeks. And they do it with great love and attention while at the same time taking care of the daily medication, emergency vet visits and more.

While most of the dogs with St. Louis Senior Dog Project are adoptable we have a few dogs in hospice care. Some of our hospice dogs are dogs that have been with us for a while and have fallen ill and can't fully recover, others join us later on disposed off by their families or breeders after falling ill. I cannot imagine the amount of love all animals in hospice care receive from their foster families and I am truly thankful for the existence of people willing to help out in this way.No pet should have to cross Over the Rainbow Bridge alone or without experiencing the love of a home.

A large part of our mission is to rescue and find homes for the most amazing senior dogs :). However sometimes some of these senior pooches have special conditions and they become our forever fosters. These pooches stay in our care until they are called Over The Rainbow Bridge and we strive to provide them a loving home and the best possible care and to maintain their comfort during their days with us.

Bell is Over The Rainbow Bridge

Today the dogs are taking a break after a hectic adoption event and so they are letting me, the human, come over and type away for a bit and talk about Bell one of our pooches that sadly went Over The Rainbow Bridge this last week.

Miss Bell was a senior lady pooch that had been in foster care for a little over a year. She came to St. Louis Senior Dog Project in April 2009 picked up as a stray in the Webster Groves, MO area. When she received vet care we were told that Bell had cancer and that she was not going to survive an aggressive treatment because of her age. So her foster mom took her in and prepared to give her a few weeks of good life, however Miss Bell was a fighter and a spunky old gal and she lived 18 months more!

She was never considered adoptable due to her disease but she had a loving foster home with fur brothers and sisters that kept her company and a wonderful foster mom and dad that gave her lots of attention and most importantly she was kept as comfy as possible in her last moments. Our leader Ellen tells all of us during hard moments that we can consider a dog very lucky if a human cries at their passing and Bell's passing brought tears to many. We remember her and we remind ourselves of our mission to help senior dogs find new homes however we find ourselves with more and more hospice pets like Bell that can't find a new home because of their illness and we try to give these senior dogs lots of love and comfort in their remaining days whether its a day or two years.

Hi there, this is Puggit, that's me in the picture down there.

I am so excited to be participating in the Adopt-a-less-adoptable-pet Week Campaign. I am glad that so many bloggers, facebook and twitter humans are spreading the word about pooches like me! yeap pooches with special needs!
I had a pretty bad family that didn't care about me when I ran away, I got caught by animal control and fortunately the St. Louis Senior Dog Project got a hold of me and I have been with them ever since, waiting patiently for a new home.
So what's my special need? Well my previous family never treated me for chronic dry eye condition and my little bug pug eyes eventually got all messed up :( . Now I get eye drops every day, but that's pretty much it! see you open my eyes, drop stuff in and I am set! I can get around pretty well as I am able to see shadows and shapes. There is nothing holding me back and I am pretty adventurous and playful. We are following the lead of the cool blog Two Little Cavaliers and writing about the Pedigree Adoption Drive.

Natsumi tells all

Hi there - my name is Natsumi. Funny name, huh? My human foster brother decided I should be given a Japanese name from one of his favorite Japanese cartoon shows. (Don't tell him I called it a cartoon, though, he insists it should be called anime!) He told me it means beautiful summer in Japanese and that they think I'm so pretty they wanted me to have a pretty name.

I had a very unhappy beginning of my life and I don't like to talk about it much, which makes it hard for my foster family because they don't know really what happened to me.     One thing they do know is that I ended up in a place called The St. Charles Animal Shelter and the person who brought me asked that I be PTS the next day.    What does PTS mean??       Maybe it means Person To Smooch** because the next day this lady came and drove me back to her home and was really nice to me.    I was so scared when she came and got me because I was in a confusing place with people I didn't know.    I don't see very well and I can get a little intimdated when I don't understand what's going on.    The nice lady at the shelter opened my cage door and I ran out.     Between the two of them, though, they were able to pick me up.    I rode in the car with the new lady and she said very nice things to me and helped me calm down during the drive.

I really like this new home. I have lots of other dogs to play with and a warm bed wherever I want.   My foster family tells me I'm silly because I play with things that are a little different than their other dogs.   I love empty dog food cans, empty boxes and kleenexes.   My foster Mom chcuckles because every morning I perform a musical number by clanking my different cans together.

Right after I came to this place, I went to a special dog doctor to look at my eyes.   I can't see out of one eye at all and they told my foster Mom I can see light/dark/shadows from my other eye.    To help me keep that little bit of sight, she puts one eye drop in my eye two times every day.    She tells me all the time what a good girl I am when she needs to give me my eye drop.     I will need to have these eye drops in my eye for the rest of my life. My foster Mom is so proud of me because it took me just a few days before I knew my surroundings and quit bumping into things.    She said she has to be careful not to move her furniture around because it will confuse me again.

My favorite thing in the world is to have my fur stroked.    I'll stand on my hind two feet and my foster human Mom or Brother will pick me up to pet me.   My foster human brother says that I melt into them.   I don't want to move an inch because it feels so good to have my belly or ears or chin or head .... oh heck I love being rubbed anywhere!

My foster Mom said she wants me to go into a quiet house because I use my ears and nose so much. Sometimes when other little kids are around, I get extra confused because it's so loud. I would really love to be with someone that doesn't have any stairs and will be patient with taking me in and outside to go to the bathroom.

Hi all, Blue here again blogging! I got some pretty cool news today that I wanted to share with you all :) today the awesome anipals from #nipclub have decided to make the St. Louis Senior Dog Project their new charity!

I came upon these cool anipals on a stormy night, it was dark, I didn't know where to go... Ok I am totally making that up! Just wanted to give it a dramatic effect LOL. Anyway seriously I found this group last week and I joined them for their Anipal Drag Pawty! Check out my pic, I went as a bunny, hopped all the way to the #nipclub bar and drank a Hanks Bacon Beer, yummy! After chatting a couple of cool cats from St. Louis asked their human to contact one of our humans to ask her if the St. Louis Senior Dog Project could be the next #nipclub Charity! Today that became official and let me tell you all anipals out there all my senior dog friends (and not so senior too) are thankful and we send you woofs and licks, well no licks for the cats just a little pat ;)

Hi everyone!

My name is Blue and I am senior beagle being fostered by the St. Louis Senior Dog Project. I came to this group after my owner passed away and no one in their family could take care of me. It's a sad story that repeats itself more often than you think (Remember Thelma and Louise?), but at this moment I have a great foster mom and a happy place to stay while I wait patiently for a new home of my own.

I am so excited to be the featured Dog of the Week and even more excited to have been asked to host our Second Giveaway!! I know we have been a bit secretive Homer and I about what it's going to be, but don't worry just hold on for a couple of more days. Homer talks about International Homeless Animals Day

Hi all!
My name is Homer and I am this weeks Dog of the Week!

I would like to talk to you today about International Homeless Animal Day.
This day began to be celebrated by the International Society for Animal Rights (ISAR) in 1992 with the aim of reaching out and spreading the word on pet overpopulation and the tragedy that is pet homelessness.
I was once homeless, I was picked up as a stray by a rural shelter, I don't remember how many days I was out on the road, and really my only concern was finding a safe spot for the night and some food to survive. I wasn't in a horrible shape when I got picked up by the shelter but I have seen other fosters come in to the St. Louis Senior Dog Project in dire conditions after spending months on the road.
Pet homelessness can be ended by spreading the word on spay/neuter programs, getting information on training and living with pets and by supporting your local rescue groups by adopting from them or sponsoring a rescue dog,cat, lizard, hamster, anyway you get the point :) woof woof

One of our fellow bloggers Bocci Beefs is requesting ideas on how you can help out your local rescue group this coming Saturday, stop by his blog and give your ideas.

I suggested a monetary donation or gift cards for online pet pharmacies or pet shops. If you have a local rescue that focuses on senior animals help them out by sending them a small donation or a gift card. Veterinary care for neglected senior animals can go through the roof pretty fast, specially those animals that have suffered years of neglect. But really any kind of donation will be appreciated by the group you choose :)

The Dogs of Divorce -- Zippy's story

Hi all,

My name is Zippy and I am the Dog of the Week.

I want to share with you all a bit about myself.

So how did I end up with St. Louis Senior Dog Project?

I was rescued as a stray by St. Charles County, MO Animal Control and was taken too the pound. I stayed there for a couple of days until they found my owners. The Animal Control officers thought my previous owners would be relieved to find me, well..... that was not the case, my owners had actually been the ones that had dumped me out on the road :( . At 10 yrs old I found myself without a home.

The reason they got rid of me was because they were getting a divorce.

There are situations and you may read up on this all over the web where the dog/cat/mouse etc is cause of a struggle between owners and there are custody hearings and negotiations about visitation. I consider those animals lucky because at least someone still cares enough to fight for them, I on the other hand got the boot as soon as they both realized neither one of them cared enough about me to keep me. This actually happens a lot more than you realize. Just three months ago another dog of divorce named Jetta was rescued by St. Louis Senior Dog Project, her owners dumped her at animal control as well, neither one of them wanted her. Jetta was fostered for a few months and finally got her happy ending: she found a new family that loves her :)

Divorce is awful, for the couple, for the kids and for the pets. I just wish people thought more about how we pets are not an object to be gotten rid of, we are alive, we have needs, we want a nice cuddle, if you have to undergo the pain of a divorce please take your pet in to account in your future plans. Don't dump your pet on the road, get information of options for your pet. If you are struggling through a bad divorce find a safe place for your pets, with a relative or at a kennel, somewhere where they can stay until you are ready to take care of them again. I was a pet for 10 yrs or more and suddenly I found myself struggling in the streets, please don't do that to your pet. I beg you.

A final thought: What would happen if people could dump their kids in an orphanage/foster care when they got divorced the same way they dump animals? How many would actually do it?

Hi all! My name is Zippy! and i am one cool photogenic senior dog! I am an 11 year old dachshund/ jack russel mix.

Just last weekend I went with a bunch of other foster dogs to a RiverCity Rascals baseball game! It was awesome, there are certain days during the season when us pooches are allowed to go to the game and hang out with our parents (or foster parents) and meet other pooches :) That day Velma a previous St. Louis Senior Dog foster came in with her family, she is one lucky lady. Hi everyone! My name is Rosie, but my foster mom likes calling me Miss Rosie since she thinks I am very proper lady dog!

Well I am organizing a giveaway, that hopefully you all have had a chance to take a look in to and if not head over to read all about it! It's going to go on for one more week so you still have plenty of time!

So anyway back to what I really wanted to tell you about today, and that is my story.

How did I end up being fostered by St. Louis Senior Dog Project? Well it turns out my so called family had me for years and years tied up in their yard. I don't think they really cared much about me or my health and I had litter after litter of puppies. I get sad sometimes thinking about what happened to them and I so hope they found a better life than the one I had.

St. Louis Senior Dog Project rescued me from a bad situation, gave me a second chance and let me tell you I am such a happy dog now! I have discovered I absolutely love going on walks to the park and love snuggling with my foster brothers.

However I sometimes have flash backs to my previous life, so I get scared when something makes a loud noise, and I go and hide under my foster mom's desk. She kindly reaches under and shows me everything is ok, I think I have made a lot of progress with dealing with the day to day noises in a household. One thing I am still working on is my awareness of the space around me, i think it is an effect from being outside and tied up all those years that it's hard for me to maneuver around the house sometimes. I am particularly not keen of walking thru doorways, my foster parents will usually coax me and gently guide me showing me that it's ok to walk thru, that nothing bad is going to happen to me if I go outside. So that is one more thing we are working on right now!

Well I really don't want to write a super long post, I know all the other Dogs of the Week say the same thing and we all end up writing a loooong looong story, it's only because we like to share it with you all out there, perhaps my new family is reading this right now!

Ok well it's time for a walk so I best get on my way,

I, Winken, St. Louis Senior Dog Project foster dog, am a shy dog. .

There I said it, I am a shy dog and there is nothing wrong with that! Let me tell you a bit more about myself:

After I was rescued from a puppy miller auction I was happy but had a hard time showing it to my foster mom. I was not yet one year old but the experiences I lived at the puppy mill had already affected me. I was never held or socialized and I lived in a gloomy environment, those factors contributed to making me a shy dog. It was hard for me in the beginning to trust humans, little by little I got more comfortable with my foster mom and let me tell you she has been so patient and loving with me, she even decided to let me go for a little bit to spend time at other foster homes so I could learn to trust other humans besides her. And guess what? I was able to grow accustomed to other houses and the humans living there :) So you can say I have come a looooooong way.

But... to tell you the truth I still get shy sometimes, specially in environments with lots of people, like adoption events. I get shy and then you know what happens? I get overlooked. I become one of those dogs that just doesn't show well, you know the kind, the dog that you see at the shelter cowering in the corner, the dog that is at the adoption event in a crate and barks constantly or just curls up and lays there. It is rough for some dogs to deal with all the hustle and bustle of an adoption event so you may wonder why I go, and the reason is because it's the best place for me to meet my new family!

I do have some advice for you all humans out there, next time you stop by a shelter or by a rescue adoption event and you see a dog that doesn't seem to be quite in their element, please take the time to talk to their foster parents. They are in constant contact with the dog and they have likely struggled alongside with the dog to grow accustomed to being petted and held, and even better they have observed the dog in a home environment and are likely to know a lot more about the dogs character. Foster parents are the best resource you have to find out about a potential new family member, if that is not available a lot of the local shelters feature info pages on the cages of the dogs at their facilities. Take the time to review them and read the notes the volunteers have written about your potential new dog.

Information, information, information! you can never have enough of that when considering to adopt a dog, but it is particularly important when considering to adopt a shy or fearful dog.

Give a shy dog a chance to get to know you and you will see them blossom.

Hi everyone!

Winken here, Thelma and Louise never got back to posting again they got busy getting ready for our BIG adoption event this weekend. They did however send my foster mom an email letting us know that my turn as the official Dog of the Week has started! I am super excited!

If you haven't read my story you can go back a couple of blogs and read Dogs of the Week Blog the Change. If you are in a rush that's ok, you can always come back and visit our blog later :)

Well it is kind of late and I should be getting some sleep but I did want to share with all of you some info on our BIG adoption event going on this week. The St. Louis Senior Dog Project is holding an adoption event not only Saturday but Sunday as well! *foster mom walks in the room and talks to Winken* Oh yeah, my foster mom Michel just reminded me to tell you guys the spot where we are going to be at: From 11am to 3pm come visit us at the Kirkwood Petco, Kirkwood, MO.

Now, don't think that because you are not looking for a pet you shouldn't stop by! Just come and show us dogs some love, give us a hug or a pet, we always enjoy that. And while you are there maybe you can come and talk to some of the humans of the group and find out a bit more of what they do.

Finally if you are not in the St. Louis area I super super encourage you too still go out and check out your local humane society and shelter and give those dogs/cats/rabbits etc some love, they will appreciate it :)

Hi everyone this is Thelma writing, Louise is right here by my side. This is our last day as Dogs of the Week, we are stepping down after a cool week of tweeting and blogging about our days, please don't be sad though we may come back in a few weeks to give you a bit of an update or you may hear about our adoption :) We hope you keep coming back to Dogs of the Week and that you follow the other dogs @STLSeniorDog and even better we hope you spread the word about us and other dogs being fostered by St. Louis Senior Dog Project.

We might post again today, depends on our schedule, because you know we have so many things to do! We gotta watch The Young and the Restless and we have to take our power naps so that we are refreshed and ready for a Friday night!

Dogs of the Week Blog the Change

Hi everyone, this is Winken here writing, I am going to be the next Featured Dog of the Week from the St. Louis Senior Dog Project on @STLSeniorDog The doxie girls, Thelma and Louise asked me to write the Blog the Change post for our cause.

Our cause is the St. Louis Senior Dog Project, the three of us and about 70 more dogs are currently being fostered in a home just like yours, in a home were there are probably already way to many dogs but there is always room to squeeze one more in :).

I was rescued in August 2009, picked up at a auction from a puppymiller closing his kennel. When you hear about puppy mills closing I think most people are worried about the poor little puppies in cages and forget about those older dogs that made the puppies, those older dogs that have spent their entire lives in cages. Their fate is pretty grim when a kennel closes down, you buy a puppy for 500 dollars and you find the older 7 year old dog being sold for 30 dollars at an auction. That's it, that is what a dog is worth to people that constantly bred them and never held them, 30 bucks. On the day of the auction people bid faster and higher for the puppies, and only a few groups, St. Louis Senior Dog Project among them, didn't turn their backs on the older dogs and on those not quite old but still in need of a home like me. My current foster mom Michel was there that day and I have been with her ever sense. I was in pretty bad shape when she first got me, I couldn't handle being picked up and I would loose control of my bowels if someone made the motion to touch me. I won't elaborate too much as too why I came to be this way, I think while I was at the puppy mill I lost myself, I know what you are thinking, that's pretty deep and I am only a dog, but every creature has its energy and mine was gone, I didn't know how to be a true dog.

My cause is the St. Louis Senior Dog Project because I have found myself once more, with love and patience and even more love. I have a second chance and its because of all their efforts. I am still looking for a forever home and I hope to find it soon because I am ready to start my real life.

Thelma and Louise's Wednesday Post: Dachshund Day

It's Dachshund Day, its Dachshund Day! what? you didn't know about Dachshund Day? Ok fine we made it up, but really don't dachshunds deserve their own day? Hey Thelma went to the other computer and found out that there is a Dachshund Day in NYC!!

We doxies sure deserve a day to be celebrated, we are after all amazing dogs, wonderful companions, versatile animals. We can go from lap dog to earth dog, tiny to biggie, dapple to... well other kinds of dapple ;)

We are happy being dachshunds, even with our tiny legs, don't let the legs fool you, if you have a treat for us we will run to you as fast as a greyhound and jump as high as a lab! We were badger hunters at one point and this means we were bred to be very persistent dogs and to never back down. Now you can enjoy these attributes by participating in your local EarthDog Club's activities, its a great way to have fun with your doxie.

We think we gave you good points as to why you SHOULD ADOPT A DACHSHUND RIGHT NOW. *chanting hypnotically* adopt a dachshund, adopt a dachshund, adopt a dachshund *clap of paws*

Thelma and Louise: Our story continued

Hi! This is Thelma! My sister is having a nap while we wait for our foster mom to come home. Hope you all read the first part of our story, if not just go back one post :)

So where were we? I remember now, our previous owner sadly had to give us up due to illness and age. However no one in her family decided to step up and take care of us. Now there are some details that Louise wouldn't tell me all about (she is older by a few minutes so she thinks she is much wiser than me) but I believe that our owner's family had decided to have us put to sleep. *gasp* :(

For a while Louise and I were really stressed out, not knowing what was going to happen to us, but then St. Louis Senior Dog Project heard about our situation and came and took us in, and just like that we had a SECOND CHANCE.

And here we are a couple of months later, not to say the least about our foster family we love them, but we would love a family of our own, someone to take us places and call us their pets. We have been waiting calmly, well Louise has, because let's face it some days I get anxious. I wonder if someone will want two older dogs, I keep my hopes up because at St. Louis Senior Dog Project they are all about keeping your spirits high and thinking that everyone deserves a second chance and most importantly that there are humans (like you reading right now) that are willing to give dogs like us a SECOND CHANCE.

Hi everyone!

We are Thelma and Louise, two amazing dachshund sisters! We got to twitter and now we get to blog! :) .

We want to tell you all first a bit about how we landed on St. Louis Senior Dog Project. A lot of the times people think that dogs end up with a rescue because they are problem dogs, it gets even worse with senior dogs because people think that by adopting a senior dog you are getting a sickly dog and you are just paying for vet bills that someone else didn't want to pay.

Well we are here to tell our story, to take away those common misconceptions! We were adopted together by a wonderful woman who was a senior citizen. Our owner's health began to deteriorate and she became less and less able to take care of us financially and physically :( She loved us dearly and we loved her dearly but her family asked her to let us go.

So as you can see there was nothing wrong with us, not even with our owner, but things happen and while we brought her much happiness she was too ill to take care of us. Okay so that takes care of the first misconception about rescue dogs, a little bit more on our story later, we are after all dachshunds so our short legs get tired with all this typing.

Hi! This is one of the few posts I will directly be making, I really wanted to explain what is going to go on from now on in this blog.

I volunteer for the St. Louis Senior Dog Project my name is Elisa and I am a graduate student. The St. Louis Senior Dog Project focuses on rescuing dogs from a variety of situations ranging from animal control to rural humane societies, we mainly rescue older dogs that desperately need a second chance but we have dogs of ages from a few months up to their senior years :). So what brings me to this blog? I began my volunteering outpost on Twitter last week and I am the proud official twitterer for this awesome rescue group! Well one of the things I wanted to start was the Dog of the Week, and I wanted to give the dogs a chance to tell their story and write about what they do on a day to day basis. Letting the dogs do this on twitter is getting a little hard, telling their stories in 140 characters is difficult because some of them have these amazing stories to share. The dogs will still be showing up on Twitter but this blog will be for them to share their day to day activities, every week a new dog will come up and tell us a bit about themselves.
